eBallot Enables University Students With Disabilities to Vote Online in Student Government Elections
Web-based election solution complies with Section 508 government technology standards enforcing accessibility for people with disabilities
Washington, D.C., May 20, 2008 - Continuing to promote voter equality through online election technology, Votenetâ„¢ Solutions, Inc., the leading provider of secure online voting and nomination solutions for associations, corporations, law firms, non-profits, universities, and organizations, announced today that San Francisco State University (SF State) successfully completed its first online student government election using the eBallotâ„¢ Web-based election solution, enabling its 30,000 students, including those with disabilities, to utilize the same voting process. eBallot is now in compliance with California Government Code 11135, which applies Section 508 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, as amended in 1998 to State entities, including the California State University system, and ensures that this Web-based election solution is fully accessible to people with disabilities."SF State promotes equity and social justice for all, regardless of disability, and provides barrier-free environments and access to all resources," stated Eugene R. Chelberg, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at San Francisco State University. He further commented; "Replacing our paper-based election process with the eBallot Web-based system enabled all students to participate in the election using the same system rather than necessitating a separate method for disabled students. The recent implementation of eBallot at San Francisco State resulted in not only the achievement of our primary goal of greater student participation, but also in a reduction in election overhead costs and administrative time."
eBallot has been independently tested and approved for compliance with all 16 standards for Web accessibility within the Section 508 legislation, and for complete compatibility with screen reader software such as JAWS. Web design standards for accessibility include providing a text equivalent for every non-text element, such as images, and ensuring that if color is used to convey information, said information is also conveyed as text.
"Equality in the election process is crucial for the success of any governing body, as it must represent all of its constituents to be effective. While complying with government standards is important and necessary, our goal has always been to make eBallot equally accessible to all people to promote election participation and fairness," stated Michael Tuteur, Chief Executive Officer and President, Votenet Solutions, Inc.
