Challenges

VTO’s by-laws stipulate that they must notify their membership and (see note below) conduct their contract ratification voting in a 24 hour period. The hurried process was complicated further since VTO was relying on paper ballots. The entire process left voters confused and resulted in 2-3% of ballots being returned unreadable. The issue of invalid ballots was a major setback every time VTO ran an election. The tabulation of the ballots also proved difficult and time-consuming for volunteers.

Solutions

VTO used eBallot’s email reminder system to notify voters and ensure that all members received notification of the election. The online ballot was available instantaneously, so members weren’t left waiting for their ballots and had a full 24-hours to cast their votes.
